Before Lockdown I was developing a series of paintings about the hinterland between the urban and ‘nature’. Then everything stopped. Initially I turned from my studio to decluttering my life and gardening, possibly as a distraction but mainly to get my bearings. In May I moved to help my daughter, her husband, their 2 year old and my newborn grandchild. I took a portable studio and sketchbook. In June I returned home to my studio and resumed working in acrylics on abstract pieces, which with hindsight I see were grappling with the atmosphere of Lockdown and the foregrounding of uncertainty.
